The elaborate pierced and cast decoration places the piece firmly within the Art Nouveau tradition for which Comyns' silverwork is particularly admired. ㅤ The belt is constructed from a succession of individually worked silver panels, each cast and pierced in relief with an elegant female profile surrounded by symmetrical stylised naturalistic motifs. The flowing composition creates an unmistakably Art Nouveau character, combining the female form with organic ornamentation. ㅤ Between the principal panels are smaller articulated links decorated with charming cherub faces, introducing further figural detail while allowing the belt to move naturally when worn. ㅤ The substantial buckle continues the richly sculptural treatment and provides an impressive focal point to the composition. Each component bears corresponding marks, demonstrating the carefully coordinated construction of the complete piece. ㅤ William Comyns was one of London's distinguished silversmiths of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly recognised for finely pierced and decorative silver in Victorian and Art Nouveau styles. Comparable William Comyns Art Nouveau buckles are known with elaborate openwork, floral and figural decoration. ㅤ At approximately 69.3 cm overall, the belt has considerable presence and is far more substantial than a standalone buckle. Its combination of articulated construction, figural decoration, identifiable maker and precise 1908 London hallmark makes it an especially appealing example of Edwardian silver jewellery and decorative arts. ㅤ A striking and unusual piece suitable for wearing, display or inclusion within a collection of important Art Nouveau silver and antique jewellery.
