A magnificent 19th-century Renaissance Revival bookcase, substantially constructed from solid oak and distinguished by its imposing architectural proportions, extensive carved decoration and dramatic barley-twist columns. The upper section comprises a large glazed bookcase enclosed by doors and fitted internally with three adjustable shelves, allowing considerable flexibility for displaying books, porcelain, collectibles or objets d'art. The lower section incorporates two generously proportioned drawers, beautifully carved and fitted with striking sculptural Green Man handles. Beneath is a substantial double-door cupboard providing extensive concealed storage. Particularly impressive are the barley-twist columns and extensive Renaissance Revival carving throughout the façade. Ornate motifs, sculptural details and carefully worked architectural elements demonstrate the considerable craftsmanship invested in the piece. The solid oak displays pronounced natural figuring, deep warm colour and an attractive mature patina that further accentuates the carved surfaces. Raised upon traditional turned bun feet, the bookcase has an exceptionally commanding presence, standing more than 2.3 metres high.
Presented in very good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and use consistent with its 19th-century origin. The bookcase retains its key and fittings. For easier transportation and installation, the piece separates into two principal sections. An exceptional statement example of Renaissance Revival furniture, ideally suited to a grand library, drawing room, study or sophisticated period interior.
