The figure is captured with considerable character and movement, with particular attention given to the student's cheerful expression, period clothing and naturalistic stance. The book and marble introduce a narrative quality to the composition, giving the sculpture an engaging and playful character. Finely cast in bronze, the work displays detailed modelling throughout, from the folds and textures of the clothing to the facial features and smaller attributes held by the figure. The bronze has developed a rich, naturally aged patina, with variations in tone enhancing the depth and definition of the sculptural details. Presented in good antique condition. There is a small crack to the lower left area near the base, consistent with age; this remains visible on close inspection and should be considered part of the condition of the piece. with its substantial 41 cm height and engaging subject matter, the sculpture has considerable decorative presence and would display beautifully upon a pedestal, console, library table or desk. A characterful example of 19th-century figurative bronze work, equally suited to a traditional collection or as a distinctive sculptural accent within a contemporary interior.
