Dating from the closing year of the First World War, the medallion represents an attractive combination of British sporting history and traditional goldsmithing. Its presentation format reflects the medals and awards commissioned by regional sporting associations during the early 20th century to commemorate competition, achievement and membership. The piece is executed in warm yellow gold, with finely worked detailing giving the medallion an elegant decorative character. Its compact proportions and sporting association make it equally appealing as an antique jewellery object or as part of a collection of historic British sporting memorabilia. Vaughton & Sons was particularly associated with the manufacture of medals, badges and presentation pieces, and the identifiable maker together with the Birmingham hallmark and precise 1918 date adds considerably to the historical character of this example. A distinctive early 20th-century collectible combining solid gold craftsmanship, Sheffield sporting heritage and the work of an established British medal maker.
