The vessel is wheel-thrown in the traditional pharmacy-jar form, with a cylindrical body, rounded shoulders, broad projecting rim and spreading foot. Historically, jars of this type were used by apothecaries for the storage of medicinal preparations, herbs and other pharmaceutical ingredients, with the pronounced rim accommodating a cloth or parchment cover secured around the neck. The exterior is richly hand-painted with an unusual marine-inspired scheme. Stylised fish in cobalt blue, ochre and manganese brown appear amongst freely drawn scrolling foliage picked out in blue and green. Strong geometric bands encircle the shoulder and lower body, giving the composition a particularly graphic quality while retaining the spontaneous character associated with hand-decorated Mediterranean maiolica. The decoration continues around the circumference of the vessel, making the albarello visually engaging from multiple angles. The combination of marine imagery, polychrome palette and substantial proportions gives it considerable decorative presence. The piece displays considerable age-related character. As clearly illustrated in the photographs, there is a substantial historic repaired crack to one side, together with associated hairlines, surface wear, glaze imperfections and small chips around the rim. These condition issues should be considered consistent with an extensively used antique ceramic of this age and are reflected in its present appearance. An appealing example of Sicilian decorative pottery, particularly notable for its boldly rendered fish and scrolling foliate ornament. period: 18th Century Origin: Sicily, Italy Attributed production centre: Caltagirone Materials: Tin-glazed earthenware / maiolica Condition: Repaired; wear consistent with age and use.
