Produced in the celebrated Longquan celadon tradition, the charger displays the characteristic green glaze for which these ceramics have been admired for centuries. The restrained decoration and broad proportions allow the subtle tonal variations and depth of the glaze to become the principal decorative feature. Longquan celadon represents one of China's most historically significant ceramic traditions, renowned for its refined stoneware bodies and distinctive jade-like green glazes. Examples continued to be produced during the Ming dynasty for both the domestic Chinese market and international export. At 36 cm in diameter, this is a generously scaled example with considerable decorative presence. It can be displayed horizontally as a centrepiece or mounted vertically as part of a collection of early Chinese ceramics and Asian works of art. The charger remains in good antique condition commensurate with its considerable age. There are a couple of chips and several small fleabites around the rim, with no restoration or other significant damage apparent. A highly decorative and collectible example of Ming dynasty Longquan ware, combining impressive scale, historical significance and the timeless beauty of Chinese celadon.
