The helmet features the distinctive Kugel, or ball-shaped finial, traditionally associated with artillery troops and used in place of the pointed spike found on infantry Pickelhauben. Constructed from black lacquered leather, the helmet is fitted with traditional brass mounts including the Kugel and its base, front peak trim and rear reinforcing spine. The front is dominated by the characteristic Prussian spread eagle plate, displaying the crowned “FR” Friedrich Rex cipher and the banner inscribed Mit Gott für König und Vaterland. The detachable Kugel finial remains intact and can be unscrewed from its mount, consistent with the construction of period artillery helmets. The interior retains its leather liner, showing expected age-related wear, while the original drawstring is absent. The exterior displays attractive service wear to the lacquer and brass fittings together with a naturally developed patina, giving the helmet considerable historic character. Presented in very good antique condition considering its age, this is a striking example of Imperial German artillery headgear from the transition between the late 19th century and the First World War. with its instantly recognisable silhouette, aged leather and prominent Prussian insignia, the helmet makes an evocative historical collector's piece and an impressive decorative display object.
