The piece is Chinese in origin and dates to circa 1850–1899. The rectangular case is executed in the intricate cloisonné technique, in which fine metal wires define individual areas of decoration before being filled with coloured enamels. The result is a richly textured and highly detailed surface that demonstrates the accomplished craftsmanship associated with Chinese enamel work. Prominent dragons form the principal decorative motif, lending the piece a dramatic character. Within Chinese decorative tradition, the dragon has long been associated with power, strength and auspicious fortune, making it one of the most important and recognisable motifs in Chinese art. Originally designed as a cigarette case, the piece can now be appreciated as a compact decorative object and collectible example of late Qing metalwork. Its combination of colourful enamelling, intricate craftsmanship and traditional symbolism makes it particularly suitable for a collection of Chinese cloisonné, Asian works of art or antique boxes.
