The romantic scene presents the two figures upon a classical balustraded terrace overlooking an expansive lake and distant mountainous landscape. One lady sits holding a basket overflowing with flowers while her companion stands beside her beneath a flowering architectural column, creating an elegant vision of aristocratic leisure and refinement. Woven in the Gobelins tradition using a Point Jacquard weave, the tapestry displays an attractive and sophisticated palette of muted greens, ecru, beige, gold and soft peach tones. The subtle colouring gives the work a wonderfully aged appearance while allowing the details of the costumes, flowers, architecture and landscape to remain clearly defined. The central composition is surrounded by a richly patterned woven border incorporating scrolling acanthus and foliate motifs, complementing the Rococo character of the scene. The tapestry is fully lined to the reverse and fitted with fabric loops for suspension from the included turned wooden hanging rod. The design is based upon the fashionable courtly and pastoral imagery popularised by Boucher, who became Premier peintre du Roi to Louis XV in 1765. Such compositions became enormously influential throughout European decorative arts and were subsequently reproduced in tapestry and textile form. A charming decorative wall hanging with considerable presence, ideally suited to a traditional interior, country house, bedroom, drawing room or French-inspired decorative scheme.
