The table features a practical gateleg mechanism with a drop leaf to the rear, allowing the surface to be extended whenever additional space is required. When closed, the table has a depth of just 50 cm, increasing to a generous 90.5 cm when fully opened. Its beautifully shaped outline and distinctive construction give the table considerable individuality, setting it apart from more conventional gateleg and occasional tables. The supporting gateleg arrangement has been thoughtfully incorporated into the design, providing reliable support for the extended leaf while allowing the table to retain compact proportions when closed. Crafted from quality oak, the timber displays particularly attractive natural grain, rich warm colouring and appealing tonal variation throughout. The understated finish allows the natural beauty and character of the oak to remain a central feature of the design. The clean lines, considered proportions and emphasis on quality materials and craftsmanship reflect the principles associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. Very well made and of fine quality, the table combines decorative character with excellent everyday practicality. Its adaptable configuration makes it particularly useful in interiors where additional surface space is occasionally required. Measuring 122 cm wide, the table provides a substantial surface and could be used as a side table, occasional table, lamp table or adaptable display table within a living room, hallway or study. The combination of its unusual form, gateleg mechanism, richly figured oak and versatile proportions makes this a particularly appealing example of early 20th-century furniture. Presented in good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its early 20th-century origin. A highly desirable Arts and Crafts oak gateleg side table combining distinctive design, beautiful natural timber, quality craftsmanship and adaptable functionality within an unusual and timeless form.
