The pair represents an elegant example of early 19th-century british tableware, combining practical function with the refined character of the regency and george iv periods. Each coaster is formed with a broad circular body designed to accommodate a wine or spirit bottle while protecting the polished surface of a dining table. Their balanced proportions and understated ornamentation give the pair a sophisticated appearance suited to both formal and more contemporary interiors. Old sheffield plate is an important historic british metalworking technique in which silver was fused to a base metal, producing objects with much of the appearance and decorative quality of solid silver. Developed in sheffield during the 18th century, the technique became particularly important for producing elegant tableware during the georgian period. Dating to approximately the 1830s, these coasters retain the substantial character and craftsmanship associated with georgian dining accessories. Their matched presentation makes them especially attractive displayed together on a dining table, drinks cabinet or sideboard. The period, british origin and old sheffield plate construction are consistent with an early 19th-century date. A decorative and practical pair of georgian table accessories, combining nearly two centuries of history with the distinctive appeal of traditional old sheffield plate.
