An exceptional and highly collectible french porcelain moon flask (pilgrim vase form) dating to circa 1870–1880, beautifully exemplifying the height of the late-victorian chinoiserie aesthetic.
this rare dual-signed piece showcases a prestigious historical collaboration between two legendary limoges workshops. The porcelain blank was expertly cast by the firm of demartial & tallandier at their rue des pénitents-blancs factory. It was then hand-painted, enameled, and gilded at the elite paroutaud studio, carrying the highly sought-after hand-inked underglaze "d.&t / l" factory mark alongside the distinct "pp" decorator hallmark on the base.
standing 25cm tall, the vase features an vibrant, canary-yellow ground framed by an elegant flared neck and base adorned with turquoise blue geometric paneling and rich, heavy gilding.
while crafted in the late 19th century, this vase’s striking geometric moon-flask silhouette and high-contrast canary yellow palette allow it to transition seamlessly into high-end art deco and hollywood regency interiors. It makes a spectacular focal point styled on a lacquered art deco sideboard, a gilded bar cart, or framed against bold wallpaper.
materials & composition
the piece is made entirely from luxury, multi-fired artistic elements:
• limoges hard-paste porcelain: crafted from a highly refined mixture of kaolin clay, feldspar, and quartz. This specific french porcelain is famous for being incredibly white, thin, and translucent when held to the light.
• overglaze enamels: the bird and botanical scenes are built up using vitreous mineral enamels, applied by hand on top of the smooth glaze and fired a second time at a lower temperature to fuse the colors.
• liquid gold gilt: the bright accents on the rim, handles, and base are made of fired-on liquid gold, burnished after baking to create a reflective, metallic finish.
condition:
excellent antique condition consistent with age and use. Minor, honest shelf wear to the unglazed foot ring. Porcelain body is free of chips, cracks, or structural restorations. Giltwork has some rubbing esp on the handles, the enameling remain remarkably crisp, bright, and intact.
