An exceptional and imposing 18th-century English Georgian bookcase, finely constructed in mahogany and distinguished by its impressive scale, beautifully figured timber, elegant satinwood stringing and unusually comprehensive arrangement of display and storage space. This substantial piece demonstrates a high standard of Georgian cabinetmaking throughout. The mahogany has been carefully selected for its particularly attractive figuring and displays a deep, rich colour and established patina, while fine satinwood stringing provides a restrained decorative contrast characteristic of refined Georgian furniture. The upper section presents an elegant glazed façade arranged asymmetrically, with a single-door glazed cupboard to the left and a larger double-door glazed cupboard to the right. Each section contains four adjustable shelves, allowing the interior to be configured according to the size of books, ceramics, glassware or other objects being displayed. Positioned centrally are three useful drawers, all retaining their original handles and fittings. Their inclusion adds further functionality while contributing to the architectural character of the façade. The substantial lower section provides generous concealed storage through two blind-door cupboards, again arranged with a single door to the left and double doors to the right. Each cupboard contains an internal shelf, providing excellent storage for larger household or dining-room items. The bookcase is raised upon classic bracket feet, giving the substantial cabinet a well-balanced Georgian profile. The combination of glazed cabinetry, drawers, enclosed cupboards and fine inlaid decoration creates an unusually versatile piece that is both highly functional and visually impressive.
At 235 cm high and 191 cm wide, this is a genuine statement piece with considerable architectural presence. Its generous proportions would make it particularly well suited to a substantial library, drawing room, dining room or period interior. The bookcase comes complete with a key and separates into multiple sections, greatly assisting with transportation and installation despite its impressive overall scale. Presented in good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its 18th-century origin. A rare and highly desirable example of Georgian cabinet furniture, combining exceptional scale, finely figured mahogany, delicate satinwood stringing and an exceptionally practical arrangement of adjustable shelving, drawers and concealed storage.
