An exceptional 19th-century English display cabinet by the renowned cabinetmakers Maple & Co., finely crafted from mahogany and distinguished by its elaborate Chippendale-inspired decoration, extensive glazed display space and imposing architectural proportions. The upper section features an elegant glazed front opening to reveal three adjustable shelves, creating four generously proportioned display levels. The adjustable configuration allows the interior to accommodate objects of varying heights, making it particularly suitable for displaying fine ceramics, glassware, silver, books or objets d'art. The glazed cabinet retains its key, providing both security and an attractive element of its original functionality. Below the display section are two useful drawers, providing convenient concealed storage while creating a natural transition between the glazed upper cabinet and substantial lower section. The base incorporates a double-door cupboard, offering further generous storage and considerably increasing the practical versatility of the piece. Particularly impressive is the extensive decorative treatment. The cabinet is richly carved throughout with intricate Chippendale-style motifs, demonstrating considerable attention to detail and the sophisticated cabinetmaking for which Maple & Co. became internationally recognised. The mahogany itself displays pronounced natural grain and attractive figuring throughout. Deep, warm colour and a mature patina developed through generations of age and use give the timber considerable richness and beautifully accentuate the carved surfaces. The cabinet is raised upon finely turned legs united by a useful lower shelf, providing additional display space while creating a beautifully balanced foundation beneath the imposing upper structure. Standing an impressive 209 cm high, the cabinet has considerable architectural presence while retaining elegant and well-considered proportions. Very well constructed and presented in very good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its 19th-century origin. Combining documented Maple & Co. manufacture with Chippendale-inspired carving, adjustable glazed shelving and extensive concealed storage, this is a particularly desirable example of late 19th-century English cabinetmaking. An impressive statement piece for a drawing room, dining room, library or sophisticated period interior.
