The imposing upper section is arranged as an open bookcase fitted with four fully adjustable shelves, creating five generous display levels. The adjustable construction allows the shelving to be configured for books of varying sizes, artwork, ceramics and other decorative objects. Below the open bookcase is a substantial base cupboard enclosed by a pair of blind doors. The interior contains two shelves, creating three useful levels of concealed storage and providing an excellent practical counterpoint to the open shelving above. The cupboard doors are particularly attractive, featuring finely carved decoration across their fronts. The detailed carving introduces considerable depth and visual interest to the lower section while giving the otherwise architectural design a distinctive decorative character. The cabinet is raised upon a substantial plinth base, providing stability and giving the piece the strong, imposing presence appropriate to its impressive scale. Particularly appealing is the mahogany itself, displaying attractive natural grain and rich, warm colouring throughout. The established patina enhances the depth of the timber and complements the carved decoration particularly well. Standing an impressive 251 cm high, this is a true statement bookcase capable of providing substantial storage while making excellent use of vertical space. The 125.5 cm width gives it considerable presence without the excessive footprint of a wider library bookcase. A useful worktop at 98.5 cm high separates the upper and lower sections, providing an additional surface for displaying decorative objects or temporarily placing books and other items. Despite its impressive scale, the bookcase separates into two principal sections for considerably easier transportation and installation. Presented in good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its early 20th-century origin. A substantial and highly desirable example of English mahogany furniture, combining impressive proportions, extensive adjustable shelving, carved detailing and generous concealed storage.
