Yngve Ekström was a prominent Swedish furniture designer, wood sculptor and architect. He never received formal training, being entirely self-taught. As a child, he was interested in music, drawing, painting and especially carving. Inspired by the furniture exhibitions at the Röhsska Museum of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg, Ekström began to focus increasingly on furniture making as a young adult.
In 1944, he and his brother Jerker founded the furniture factory ESE-möbler (later Swedese AB). The brothers pioneered the idea of offering furniture disassembled for easier transport and self-assembly. The flat-packed components were delivered with the appropriate Allen key, a concept that would later contribute to IKEA's global success.
Ekström's most famous design is the Lamino chair from 1956. The Primo chair offered here was designed in 1980 and is a visual and functional evolution of the Lamino chair.
Ekström worked at his company until his death in 1988. His designs are now part of numerous permanent collections worldwide, including those at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 1999, the Swedish magazine Sköna Hem awarded the Lamino design the title of "Best Swedish Furniture Design of the 20th Century." This piece has an attribution mark,
