A repeating tooled fleur-de-lis pattern covers the leather case and its low, domed lid. The colour is warm chestnut. It shifts toward red where light falls directly on the leather, and darkens inside the tooled impressions.
A brass medallion sits at the centre of the front panel, cast as a rosette, and a brass swing handle is fixed to the end panel beside it. Braided leather edges every seam. The box measures twenty inches wide by eight inches deep. It stands nine inches high and weighs twelve pounds. The domed lid is hinged at the back.
