On offer is an intricate Chinese soapstone landscape carving depicting a serene mountain village. The carving depicts a traditional Chinese concept often referred to as a "Literati's Village in the Mountains" or a Shanshui (mountain-water) retreat. It features towering peaks, pavilions known as pagodas, winding paths and stylized pine trees.
Historically, these intricate carvings were produced for the literati scholar class as tabletop decorations, brush rests or contemplative objects. However, by the early-to-mid 20th century, many of these multi-layered landscape scenes were widely created for wealthy domestic collectors and the burgeoning Western export market.
SYMBOLISM: In Chinese culture, mountains represent stability, longevity and the masculine principle, known as yang. The paths and hidden dwellings signify the spiritual journey, mindfulness and harmony with nature. Pine trees specifically symbolize fortitude, resilience and long life because they remain green through harsh winters. Together, the scene reflects the ideal Daoist or Confucian retreat from public life into nature to cultivate wisdom and peace.
CREATION: It was handcrafted by skilled artisans in China, traditionally associated with historic carving regions such as Qingtian or Shoushan. Pieces with this specific style of high-relief openwork and smooth, uncarved mountain backings were heavily produced from the late Qing Dynasty (late 19th century) through the mid-20th century (Republic period to 1949).
MATERIALS: This sculpture demanded exceptional mastery of high-relief carving, deep undercutting and openwork to hollow out the structures. The craftsman needed to skillfully isolate distinct color layers or veins within the raw soapstone block to ensure the buildings and trees popped against the mountain background.
The openwork, open-carved stand is made of a contrasting piece of soapstone. Master carvers frequently used a single piece of darker variegated reddish-brown or dark-brown soapstone specifically to mimic the look of fine, polished rosewood stands.
These sculptures can be right at home as a bookshelf display (bogu jia), or centered on a prominent mantlepiece where they can be appreciated up close from multiple angles. This way, one can almost see the willow’s long hanging branches swaying in the gentle breeze.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Nonexistent.
