They represent allegorical depictions of contrasting human emotions, both joy and sorrow, manifested through the innocent faces of children.

ORIGINS: These sculptures were created after models by the renowned French Neoclassical sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741–1828). Houdon was celebrated during the Age of Enlightenment for his hyper-realistic, emotionally expressive portraiture.

The title and concept are inspired by Voltaire's famous 1738 poem, "Jean qui pleure et qui rit". The poem addresses the duality and versatility of human nature—how a person can experience deep sorrow or depression in the morning yet celebrate and feast by the evening.

While Houdon designed the concept in the late 18th century, smaller scale versions like these were widely cast in France during the late 19th century to serve as decorative cabinet pieces or bookends.

MANUFACTURING: They were produced using the lost-wax casting method, where molten bronze was poured into a detailed mold. After cooling, the metal was hand-chiseled to bring out the fine details in the hair curls and facial wrinkles and then treated with a chemical patina to achieve the rich, dark brown color. The bronze busts are secured into molded grey-blue marble plinths. The photos of the bottoms of each reveal a classic 19th-century square nut and threaded rod mounting assembly, confirming the period assembly.
