The gently tapering conical body displays deeply incised stalks of bamboo and sprawling leafy sprigs, picked out in rich brown slip against a smooth, warm cream ground. Broad brushstrokes of soft blue glaze accent the segmented bamboo nodes, lending visual depth to the continuous botanical composition that wraps around the vessel. Milled cord borders with fine ropetwist rouletting neatly frame the central decoration, separating it from wide bands of mid-blue slip around the neck and spreading base. Each blue zone is punctuated by repeating sprays of painted brown foliage. Adding further texture, the tall loop handle is realistically modelled in relief as an upright bamboo stalk, complete with raised joint collars, carved grain texture, and touched with blue pigment to match the vessel body. Made in Staffordshire around 1880, this jug illustrates how domestic wares adopted contemporary Arts and Crafts studio aesthetics while retaining practical, durable utility. The unglazed reddish-brown stoneware underside is cleanly finished, bearing a shallow foot ring and an impressed Dudson factory backstamp alongside registered shape or pattern numerals and incised workmen's marks. Measuring 22 cm in height, the jug is finished with a glossy chocolate-brown glaze throughout the interior cavity and across the pinched pouring spout. The overall potting is sturdy, functional, and balanced in weight, demonstrating the high technical standards of Victorian Staffordshire stoneware manufacture. We ship internationally, tracked.
