The figure displays an exaggerated, domed cranium, hollow cheeks, and an expressive, grinning facial countenance with finely picked-out pupils and delineated teeth. Pronounced collarbones, a sharply defined ribcage, and spindly limbs capture the severe physical austerity associated with ascetic devotion. The composition balances angular anatomy with fluid drapery. One elongated arm rests across a raised knee while the torso twists slightly, grounded on an integral round plinth carved to resemble a woven rush or straw mat with incised chevron banding. Beneath the carving sits an independent, dark-stained wooden stand shaped with irregular, lobed contours mimicking a natural gnarled root or rock base. Sculptures of this type developed in Japan during the 19th century, drawing upon traditions of netsuke and okimono carving that depicted Rakan (arhats) or Shakyamuni emerging from the mountains after years of ascetic mortification. The detailed surface work highlights the crisp grain of the boxwood, with gentle handling wear softening the high points of the cranium and shoulders.

The piece measures 16 cm in overall height, including the detachable base. A natural shrinkage split extends across the underside of the figure's integral circular plinth, consistent with the drying of solid timber over time. Both figure and stand remain structurally sound and display well. See less
