The composition focuses tightly on the soldier's weather-worn face, distinctive walrus moustache, and cocked field cap, capturing his hand steadying a curved horn embellished with thick twisted cord and hanging double tassels. The panel is executed on a flat, uncurved slab of white porcelain measuring approximately 20 cm in height by 15 cm in width. Mineral pigments in shades of charcoal, sepia grey, and soft off-white have been smoothly blended and fired into the glaze, with finely flecked white highlights creating an atmospheric, snow-dusted ground behind the subject. The reverse side remains unadorned and unmarked, showing a plain white porcelain body typical of studio or blank plaques supplied to specialist decorators. Produced in Germany circa 1914 during the opening phase of the First World War, commemorative ceramic portraits of this type were popular domestic keepsakes. Buglers and hornblowers played an essential operational role in field communications, signalling advances, retreats, and alerts, making them favoured patriotic emblems on framed plaques, steins, and decorative cabinet pieces across Central Europe. The plaque remains unframed, with cleanly squared edges and a uniform thickness of roughly four to five millimetres. Its compact rectangular format makes it well suited for bespoke framing, tabletop easel display, or inclusion within a specialised collection of historical militaria and commemorative European porcelain.
