Boldly modelled dragon handles dominate the silhouette of this baluster vase, with their clawed limbs and horned heads gripping the flared neck while their sinuous tails cascade down onto the globular lower body. The high-relief moulding gives the piece considerable sculptural depth, turning functional vessel handles into prominent mythical beasts. A thick sang de boeuf or oxblood red glaze coats the ceramic body, pooling in the carved crevices of the dragon scales and thinning slightly over sharp raised edges. This traditional monochrome glaze, inspired by classic Chinese copper-red wares, exhibits subtle tonal shifts ranging from deep claret to bright crimson, finished with an even, liquid gloss across the exterior and interior of the neck. The vase is unmarked to the base, following decorative traditions popular in Chinese export ceramics and art pottery dating from around the early twentieth century. Its robust potting, heavy foot rim, and expressive grotesque beasts evoke the ornate tastes of the late Qing dynasty into the Republic period, when ceramic workshops frequently revisited classic historic glazes on dramatic exhibition-sized display pieces.
Measuring 39 cm in height and 32 cm across its widest point, the vase commands attention on a sideboard or collector's pedestal. The structural condition is sound and stable, though careful inspection reveals previous restoration work to the flared mouth rim, as well as neat repairs to one of the dragon's ears and a foot. Minor surface rubbing and light handling marks are present around the lower base, consistent with normal age and use, while the main baluster body remains free from hairline cracks.
