The composition captures lively anthropomorphic characterisation, with the toad standing firmly on elongated webbed legs to push back against the rat's forward embrace, framed by upright reeds and marshy ground. Finished in a glossy blanc de chine monochrome glaze, the sculpture depends on fine physical relief rather than painted decoration. Smooth, rounded bellies and muscular animal limbs stand out against the serrated leaf margins and textured soil. Light catches along the raised curves of snouts, ears and open jaws, providing crisp visual definition across the compact form. The underside features an applied cobalt-blue porcelain wafer medallion, the celebrated factory mark of Parisian manufacturer Jean Gille. Created circa 1865, the piece reflects the mid-nineteenth-century French taste for satirical animalier subjects and fable illustrations, blending skilled decorative pottery technique with the popular Victorian fascination with natural history.

Measuring 11 cm in height, 12 cm in length and 7 cm in width, the desktop-scale ornament sits securely on its integral oval base. The main animal figures remain intact and sharply detailed, with condition confined to a few minor chips on the delicate tips of the surrounding foliage. See less
