This vintage set of four miniature portraits presents a gallery of profile silhouettes, two women and two gentlemen, each cut and painted in deep black and soft sepia tones on a creamy ivory ground. The ladies wear their hair in softly piled, ribboned coiffures, with delicate shading that suggests lace, bodice, and gathered sleeves. The gentlemen face left in crisp, tailored coats, one with a high white stock and collar, and the fine, feathery strokes at the hairline give the profiles a hand-finished, painterly quality beyond a simple cutout. Each portrait sits in an oval gilt-brass bezel under convex glass, which lends a soft glow and a gentle sense of depth. The bezels are set into flat, black lacquered wood panels, which create a bold, graphic contrast with the pale ovals. At the top of every frame, a small pierced brass finial in a leafy form carries a ring for hanging, with a warm, mellow patina. The paper shows slight, even toning with faint age spots, and the black finish carries soft, natural rubbing at the edges. The four pieces are closely matched in scale, framing, and hardware, so they read as one cohesive family group.
Hang these portraits together in a grid, in a pair above a console, or scatter them through a gallery wall, stairwell, library nook, or powder room. They complement Victorian, Federal, Traditional, English Country, and Eclectic interiors, especially alongside dark paneling, aged brass, and layered botanical prints. To care for them, dust the frames gently with a soft, dry cloth, avoid liquid cleaners, wipe the glass with a barely damp microfiber cloth, and keep the pieces out of direct sunlight, heat, and humidity to protect the paper. Each portrait measures approximately 4.75 inches (121 mm) wide, 0.5 inches (13 mm) deep, and 6.5 inches (165 mm) high. Offered in very good vintage condition, the set has original paper silhouettes with minor age-related discoloration, and light tarnishing and minor surface wear on the brass and glass, and is well preserved and ready to display. Add this charming family of profiles to your collection today.
