Gorman is a defining figure in contemporary portrait photography, recognized for his expressive use of light, sculptural compositions, and intimate portrayals of actors, musicians, and artists. His work bridges fine art, fashion, and Hollywood imagery, placing him alongside Herb Ritts and Helmut Newton within the influential Los Angeles photographic tradition.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1949, Gorman studied photojournalism at the University of Kansas and earned an MFA in Cinematography from the University of Southern California in 1972. His photographic beginnings included photographing Jimi Hendrix in 1968, followed by a career in Los Angeles portraiture, music photography, and motion-picture publicity. His work for Interview and the long-running l.a.Eyeworks portrait campaign helped establish his distinctive photographic voice. Film assignments included imagery for Tootsie, The Big Chill, and Scarface.
