A band around the middle carries a dark incised design: a branching tree form flanked by leaf and curve motifs, cut into the clay before the glaze was fired. The glaze pools darker in the carved lines, so the drawing shows without any paint.

Pots like this belong to the green glazed stoneware made in southern China, used for storage and the kitchen before they became collected. At 6.5 inches across and 9 inches tall, this one fits a shelf, a desk or a windowsill.
