Laura Ames is an independent multimedia artist based in Santa Rosa, California. While she created fine art print works like "Floating Leaves" earlier in her practice, she is primarily recognized today for her tactile, nature-focused three-dimensional work.
Artistic Background & Evolution
• Career Beginnings: Ames transitioned into pursuing fine art full-time following her retirement from PG&E in 2009.
• Mediums: Over her career, she has fluidly moved between printmaking, hand-built clay sculpting, functional pottery making, glazing, and painting.
Inspiration & Themes
• The Natural World: Much like the drifting leaves depicted in her collograph print, Ames draws her core inspiration from native flora, regional wildlife, and organic textures.
• Social Commentary: In her sculptural work, she frequently uses whimsical or stylized animal imagery (such as lizards, birds, and goats) to gently explore complex modern themes like climate change, immigration, and global peace, balancing serious world issues with a subtle sense of humor.
Galleries & Exhibitions
• Fulton Crossing Gallery: She maintains a permanent resident display area showcasing her pottery and small-scale sculptures at the Fulton Crossing Gallery located in Fulton, CA.
• Community Art Tours: She was a recurring featured artist for the Art at the Source Open Studios event, sponsored by the Sebastopol Center for the Arts, between 2015 and 2022.
