Traditionally associated with the Luba people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lukasa memory boards served as sophisticated mnemonic devices used by trained historians and members of the Mbudye association to preserve and interpret royal genealogies, political histories, ancestral traditions, and important cultural knowledge. The placement and arrangement of beads and other attached elements provided visual and tactile cues to guide oral storytelling and the transmission of history across generations. With its expressive carved face, elongated silhouette, and beautifully weathered surface, this striking example offers a compelling connection to Central African artistic and cultural traditions, making it a wonderful addition to a collection or part of a eclectic, thoughtfully curated interior.
