Here is a beautiful vintage Indian chain stitch tapestry, believed to date to the later part of the 20th century. Featuring a bold, Kilim-inspired tribal geometric design, the textile is beautifully detailed with a central medallion, angular motifs, and an intricate repeating border in vibrant shades of red, aubergine, terracotta, cream, and turquoise blue.
Made in India for American Home Incorporated, the piece features richly textured chain stitch embroidery in a composition of 80% wool and 20% cotton. The dense stitching gives the design wonderful dimension, while the contrasting colors and geometric patterns create a striking decorative presence. The original manufacturer's label identifies the design as "El Paso."
The reverse is lined with a lightweight cream-colored fabric, giving the textile a soft, flexible construction that is able to fold and drape, unlike a heavier traditional rug. Beautiful displayed as a wall tapestry, draped across the back of a sofa, or folded at the foot of a bed. It may also be used as a decorative area rug.
Retains its original manufacturer's label on the reverse.
