About the Artist

Manolo Contreras is a Mexican ceramic artist associated with traditional folk pottery, likely working in the mid-to-late 20th century. His work reflects regional decorative traditions, blending hand-painted imagery with functional earthenware forms. Pieces attributed to Contreras often feature bold, illustrative designs rendered in a limited palette, emphasizing line, contrast, and storytelling. Signed examples such as these indicate studio or workshop production rather than mass manufacture, adding to their collectible appeal.

About the Piece

This impressive, oversized Mexican folk art plate features three beautifully detailed birds perched among an elaborate arrangement of foliage, twisting branches, and clusters of berries. Hand-painted in black and shades of gray against a warm ivory-white background, the composition combines delicate linework, expressive shading, and bold contrasts. The reverse bears the handwritten inscription “Manolo Contreras – Hecho en Mexico – Para Hilo Negro” and is fitted with a metal hanging loop for wall display. Its generous proportions and intricate decoration make it a striking example of traditional Mexican folk art. Dimensions: 20" W × 2¼" H See less
