This striking pair of table lamps has been crafted from authentic 19th-century toleware grocer’s tea canisters. The canisters date to the mid-to-late 19th century, likely around 1860–1880, during the Victorian era. Large cylindrical canisters of this specific size (9 inches in diameter) were standard fixtures on the shelving behind the counters in general stores. The prominent, stenciled number "9" served a functional business purpose; it indicated the specific blend, flavor or grade of tea leaves stored inside so that the grocer could easily identify it for customers.
CREATION: The production of these canisters involved a multi-step industrial and artistic process.
1.Sheet Metal Fabrication: The cylindrical body, domed shoulder and lid were cut and shaped from thin sheets of tin-plated iron, commonly referred to simply as tin or toleware. The seams were rolled and soldered together by hand.
2. Japanning (The Base Coat): To protect the raw iron from rust and provide a smooth decorative surface, the metal was coated in a heavy, dark lacquer—typically black or dark olive-green varnish. This piece was then baked in a high-temperature oven to harden the finish, imitating traditional Asian lacquerware.
3. Stenciling and Gilding: Once cured, artisans applied the intricate neoclassical foliate swags, borders, and the large numeric identifier seen on these two pieces. The patterns were created using a combination of hand-cut stencils and gilt paint or gold leaf, which was then sealed with a final clear protective varnish.
LAMP CONVERSION: In the mid-to-late 20th century, decorative designers frequently repurposed these sturdy, highly visual antique canisters into statement lighting. In the case of this pair, the original lids were secured, and holes were drilled through the center to accommodate the brass risers, standard electrical sockets and heavy-duty shade harps.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Nonexistent. Base dimensions: 9 inches diameter.
