A handsome and beautifully made pair of Regency style flame mahogany bow-front bedside chests or side tables, the wonderfully figured mahogany drawer fronts displaying particularly rich, fiery grain and warm colour. Each chest is arranged with three generous graduated drawers fitted with traditional brass swan-neck handles, while the panelled sides retain useful campaign-style brass carrying handles. The gently bowed fronts and substantial moulded plinth bases give the pair a particularly smart architectural appearance. The tops are inset with hand-dyed brown leather writing surfaces, finished with an elegant gilt-tooled decorative border, while immediately beneath each top is a discreet pull-out brushing or serving slide operated by small brass knobs. This particularly useful feature derives from Georgian and Regency furniture, where pull-out slides provided an additional temporary surface beside the bed or chair; period bedside cabinets combining leather-lined slides and side carrying handles are documented in specialist collections. The combination makes these equally practical today for serving drinks, placing a book or simply providing additional surface space when required. A particularly versatile matched pair, beautifully proportioned for use as luxury bedside nightstands, lamp tables, sofa-end tables or compact side chests. The dramatic flame mahogany, rich brown leather and traditional brass furniture give them the appearance of fine Regency furniture while retaining the practicality required of modern interiors. They display expected minor marks, scratches and signs of use to the polished timber and leather surfaces, giving them an attractive established character without detracting from their wonderfully smart overall appearance.
