Exceptionally decorative examples inspired by the grand furniture of the Restoration period. The substantial mahogany frames are beautifully carved throughout, with sweeping S-scroll arms, acanthus decoration, bold scrolling legs and wonderfully elaborate shaped X-form stretchers centred by carved foliate bosses. The tall backs and imposing proportions give the pair tremendous presence and are characteristic of the late 19th-century revival of 17th-century Carolean design. Comparable period examples employ the same combination of high backs, scrolling arms, carved mahogany frames and elaborate stretchers. The upholstery is particularly attractive, combining rich dark brown leather with contrasting pale velvet back panels beautifully embroidered in silk thread with elaborate scrolling floral and foliate decoration. The leather has been traditionally hand nail-tacked to the frames using antique studs, complementing the rich colour and natural patination of the mahogany. The combination of leather, velvet, silk embroidery and heavily carved timber gives these chairs the wonderfully opulent appearance associated with the finest Carolean Revival interiors. The pair are presented in good antique condition with the desirable age-related patina expected of pieces of this period. The leather and velvet display various marks, tonal variation and signs of historic use, all of which contribute to their character; there is also one small round black mark towards the bottom of the embroidered back panel of the second chair, as photographed. Structurally they present as substantial and impressive armchairs and make an exceptional decorative pair for a country house, library or statement interior.
