The magnificent top is arranged as a radiating sunburst, with alternating figured veneers converging upon a finely executed central marquetry patera. When closed the table forms an elegant circular dining table; the ingenious Jupe mechanism allows the outer sections to separate radially, with the additional leaves fitting between them to substantially increase the diameter whilst retaining its circular form. The table stands upon an exceptionally handsome Regency-inspired pedestal base, with turned supports, shaped stretchers and four sweeping reeded sabre legs terminating in brass hairy lion-paw feet with original English brass castors. The extension leaves have been carefully retained together with their purpose-made original wooden storage case — an important and increasingly uncommon feature to find surviving with a table of this type. Bevan Funnell is a long-established English furniture maker, founded in 1945, and the quality of the veneers, cabinetmaking and mechanical construction here is particularly impressive The combination of the Jupe radial extension system, spectacular burr walnut sunburst top, marquetry patera, lion-paw castors and original leaf storage box makes this a particularly desirable example of Bevan Funnell cabinetmaking. The table is presented in very good vintage condition with age and use-related patina, which may include some light surface marks and or scratches to the polished top as photographed.
