A handsome and generously proportioned Georgian style Gainsborough library armchair, upholstered throughout in wonderfully rich hand-dyed oxblood red leather. The tall back and substantial seat are deeply buttoned in the traditional manner, displaying attractive variations of burgundy, crimson and darker tones, while the edges are finished with individually applied brass studs. The combination of deep buttoning and generous proportions gives the chair the wonderfully comfortable, established appearance associated with a traditional English gentleman's library. The chair is constructed with a polished mahogany show-wood frame, with padded leather armrests supported upon elegantly swept and reeded mahogany supports. Square reeded front legs are united to the rear legs by a substantial H-form stretcher, providing both strength and the architectural character associated with Georgian library seating. This form is generally referred to as a Gainsborough chair, and comparable examples combine precisely these features of deep-buttoned leather upholstery, open mahogany arms, brass studding and stretchered legs A wonderfully comfortable and imposing chair, equally suited for use as a library armchair, fireside chair, desk chair or gentleman's study chair.
