A stunning quality 19th-century Victorian burr walnut kidney-shaped writing table, having attractive old leather with blind-tooled decoration, inset into a crossbanded top, over a highly figured shaped frieze with one drawer, raised on elegant, bold cabriole legs with exceptional original gilt bronze and brass-mounted decoration.
Stamped on the drawer – Gillow & Co., 3576.
This fabulous quality table absolutely oozes elegance, class and sophistication, which, of course, is no less than one would expect from the well-known, highly respected cabinetmaking firm of Gillow & Co. All of the timbers used in its construction are of the highest possible grade, and they have been expertly put together by skilled cabinetmakers. It is also worth noting that the metal decoration is very, very good indeed.
A useful size for its original purpose as a writing table, or alternatively just as a small centre or occasional table in any room, this table would be a great addition to any environment. All of the gilt bronze decoration appears to be original, and there have been very few repairs or replacements, apart from the leather top, which is a high-quality old replacement and remains in good condition. That said, should one wish, the leather could very easily and relatively inexpensively be replaced.
This kidney-shaped table has been inspected and attended to in the vendor's workshops by professionally trained antique furniture restorers and has received a natural wax polish.
The table is stamped Gillow & Co., 3576, which suggests that it was made around 1875 based on the firm's records and serial number system, which was introduced around the mid-19th century but was not always used by all makers on all furniture. Gillows of Lancaster is one of the most famous English cabinetmaking firms, well known and respected for its exceptional quality output from the late 18th century through to the early 20th century.
