The waterfall form became particularly associated with Regency library furniture, the shelves progressively increasing in depth towards the base to provide practical storage for books of differing sizes whilst creating the wonderfully distinctive stepped silhouette. Genuine early-19th-century examples with this same combination of graduated shelving and base drawers are well documented. The pair are particularly decorative owing to the beautifully figured mahogany throughout, including richly patterned side panels and shelf fronts. Each bookcase incorporates four graduated open shelves above two useful frieze drawers, fitted with attractive brass shell-pattern cup handles, and stands on traditional shaped bracket feet. Finding a genuine matching pair is considerably more desirable than a single example and makes these ideal for positioning either side of a fireplace, doorway, desk or within a library or drawing room. The bookcases are presented in good antique condition with the expected light marks, tonal variation and signs of age and use as photographed. Their relatively shallow depth, generous open shelving and useful drawers make them exceptionally practical pieces of furniture, while the warm figured mahogany and elegant Regency-inspired proportions give them considerably more character than modern library shelving.
