An exceptional English Victorian Sutherland drop-leaf table in richly figured burr walnut, circa 1860–1880.
The tabletop features a shaped cartouche / scalloped-corner silhouette veneered in bookmatched burr walnut, displaying tight swirling eyes, warm amber-chestnut depth, and a lustrous polished finish. Each side leaf lowers on rule joints to create an ultra-slender profile when closed, ideal for use as a sofa-back table, hallway console, or accent piece against a wall.
When both leaves are extended, the table is supported by two slender turned swing gate legs, opening to a spacious 40.25-inch surface suitable for intimate dining, afternoon tea, or games. The trestle undercarriage is carved from solid European walnut, featuring fluted baluster standards, a ring-turned center stretcher, and arched cabriole legs with carved scroll toes resting on original brass caster wheels.
