On offer is a Louis XV-style carved walnut upholstered bench. Often classified as a large footstool or window stool, this piece is a beautiful, highly detailed example of late 19th to early 20th-century Rococo Revival furniture.
APPEAL: The primary appeal of this piece lies in its harmonious combination of fine French wood carving and intricate textile artistry. The bench perfectly embodies the fluid, asymmetrical grace of the Louis XV style, featuring zero straight lines. Its compact yet functional frame offers high decorative utility, making it an excellent accent piece for a vanity, dressing room, fireside hearth, or placed at the foot of a small bed.
NEEDLEWORK: The needlework displays a charming Neoclassical allegorical nature scene utilizing two distinct stitching techniques: a coarser needlepoint, known as “gros point,” for the background, and a highly detailed, finer “petit point” for the figures.
At the center is a classical, elevated footed compote overflowing with a lush bounty of flowers and ripe fruit including visible apples. Flanking the central urn at the top are two crested, long-necked birds—likely stylized pheasants—with wings partially outstretched. Positioned symmetrically at the bottom are two rabbits (or hares) depicted in mid-motion, rearing up on their hind legs facing center, toward the decorative base of the urn structure. The composition is framed by winding acanthus leaves, scrollwork, and a repeating border of full-bloomed pink roses and floral buds.
CARVING: The hand-carving on this piece is excellent, crisp, and deep. The serpentine aprons features a beautiful, central carved cartouche shell motif bursting with scrolling foliage. The cabriole legs feature incredibly thick, beautifully defined acanthus leaves carved directly into the upper knees. The scrolling details wrap deeply around the sides, gracefully tapering down into elegant, high-relief “escargot” or snail scrolled feet. The fluid transitions indicate high-level cabinetmaking, far superior to flatter, low-budget reproductions.
MATERIAL: The frame is crafted from solid walnut. Walnut was the preferred hardwood for high-end French country and Parisian Rococo seating due to its fine grain, strength and ability to hold crisp, intricate carved details without splitting. The piece now shows a gorgeous, authentic honey-brown antique patina with natural aging in the carved recesses.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Nonexistent.
