This remarkable antique tapestry dates to the 17th century and is attributed to Brussels, one of the most important centers of European tapestry production during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Woven from wool and cotton, this historic textile features an elaborate figural composition depicting a lively outdoor gathering centered around the collection and presentation of flowers, vegetables, and garden produce.
The scene unfolds within a richly wooded landscape, where five figures dressed in traditional European garments participate in a pastoral activity. In the foreground, a kneeling man wearing a muted rose tunic, blue breeches, and bright red stockings gestures toward a large woven basket filled with cabbages, leafy vegetables, and other freshly gathered produce. To his left, another figure wearing a deep blue tunic and red sleeves holds a bundle of vegetation, while a woman standing at the center balances an abundant basket of flowers upon her head. In the background, a seated woman and a man in a broad-brimmed hat complete the composition.
The tapestry's colors include deep indigo blue, navy, teal, forest green, olive, muted sage, antique gold, warm beige, ivory, dusty rose, burgundy, faded red, and earthy brown. The dense foliage provides a dramatic background for the lighter garments and colorful harvest elements, creating a balanced and visually engaging composition.
Measuring 5'7" × 4'11" (67 × 59 inches), the tapestry has nearly square proportions that emphasize the interaction between the figures and the detailed foreground. Its historical subject matter, expressive human figures, and traditional weaving make it a distinctive decorative textile suitable for display in a living room, library, dining room, or traditional European-inspired interior.
