The architectural stretcher and the strong proportions evoke the carved furniture of the 16th century. The Renaissance Revival, popular in the second half of the 19th century, looked back to the carved cabinets and architectural forms of 16th century France and Italy, with columns, panels and strong moldings. Its surface carries the gentle marks of age, never overworked or artificially distressed. It works equally well beside a sofa, in an entry or as a console, with the soft patina of long use. See less
