Bernhard Rohne for Mastercraft Postmodern Canted Brass & Black Lacquer "Tree of Life" Credenza Console, Circa 1980
A rare and monumental expression of late-20th-century luxury design, this canted-front credenza console was designed by German-Canadian artist and metalworker Bernhard Rohne for Mastercraft of Grand Rapids, circa 1980.
Exhibiting dramatic architectural presence, the case features a faceted, canted-corner silhouette clad in alternating fields of satin-brushed brass and mirror-polished brass pilasters, resting on a recessed piano-black high-gloss lacquer plinth base. The top deck is inset with brushed brass framed by a molded black lacquer perimeter bevel.
Each of the three doors is framed by a soft, cushion-molded high-gloss black lacquer bezel enclosing one of Rohne’s celebrated pictorial art panels. Executed using his proprietary acid-etching and torch-patination technique on sheet metal, each panel depicts a delicate, blossoming "Tree of Life" botanical motif rendered in shimmering metallic gold against a swirling, marbled field of amber, fiery copper, and smoky oxidation.
The three push-touch doors open to reveal discrete interior storage compartments fully finished in satin black lacquer and fitted with shelving, providing ample functional storage for dining service, barware, or media accessories while maintaining a sleek, tailored depth. A definitive trophy piece for Hollywood Regency, Postmodern, Miami Modern, and high-glamour contemporary interiors.
