Dating from the late 1800s to early 1900s, this massive, museum-scale vessel showcases the legendary metalwork traditions of the Himalayan Buddhist region on a grand scale rarely seen on the market.

Measuring an impressive 24 inches from spout to handle and standing 17 inches tall, this heavy, hand-crafted architectural statement piece is dense with sacred iconography. The beautifully detailed handle is cast in the form of a sinuous, protective Dragon, while the massive pouring spout emerges seamlessly from the mouth of a Makara (the mythical aquatic guardian beast). The lower tier of the bulbous body features magnificent raised-relief cartouches of a Kirtimukha (Face of Glory) to ward off evil, interspersed with rare, hand-applied polychrome cold-painted lacquer panels in rich red, turquoise blue, and deep black.

The central neck rises into a highly ornate, pierced geometric gallery topped with its original tiered dome lid and finial. The base terminates in an intricate, openwork lattice foot rim. See less
