The background is a rare and brilliant canary yellow with neoclassical details of hand-applied and gilded raised paste. There is exquisite detailing in the sculptural raised paste details. The gilding is gleaming and bright, in excellent condition without flaws.

The plates are scalloped with gilded edges and bordering the white center of the plate. The pattern combines draped garlands and oval medallions. This is Adams style revival decoration, very fashionable and a hallmark of luxury table service in the Edwardian period. The canary yellow background is uncommon. The gold swags and cartouches are slightly raised using a hand-applied, labor-intensive technique typical of top tier English factories. The scalloped, gilt-edged rim and plain center is typical of a service plate meant to sit under other courses.

The handwritten mark on the back "Ra" is the mark of Robert Allen, the Royal Doulton design studio that oversaw elaborate hand-decorated pieces and was responsible for decorating much of Doulton's ornamental ware. The pattern code is E8456 -- the "E" signifying bone china production featuring high-quality hand-painted details. Retailed by Jones, McDuffee & Stratton, Boston, c. 1910-1914.
