Crafted from brass, the inkwell is richly ornamented throughout and stands on distinctive carved-form ogre feet, giving the piece considerable character and presence. The fitted interior retains its original china ink reservoirs, an important surviving feature that complements the elaborate brass exterior. Its generous proportions and quality of execution suggest it was intended as a prominent desk accessory for a substantial interior. Presented with the patination and surface character expected of an object approaching two centuries in age.
