Known as a deception coffer due to its cleverly concealed storage arrangement, the piece appears externally as a traditional chest while one section opens to reveal additional drawers intended for the discreet storage of valuables. The upper right-hand door is operated with its surviving key and opens to reveal three internal drawers. The coffer is richly decorated with hand-carved arched architectural detailing incorporating garlands, flowers and leaves. These decorative elements, combined with the substantial walnut construction and sculptural hairy paw feet, give the piece considerable presence. The coffer retains its original pin hinges and original back. An old lock remains fitted to the top, although its key is no longer present and the lock hasp is broken. A separate key is present for the upper right-hand door. Constructed as a single substantial piece, this is an unusual and highly characterful example of 18th-century Italian furniture, combining decorative carving with an ingenious concealed storage arrangement.
