The substantial oak structure … Read more An impressive Victorian country oak bookcase, dating from circa 1860–1880 and distinguished by extensive hand-carved decoration. The substantial oak structure has developed an attractive medium to dark colour and features an elaborate arrangement of carved figures, angelic faces and lion heads, giving the bookcase a particularly sculptural and characterful appearance. The glazed section retains its original glass and is enclosed by two doors, providing generous display and storage space. A single drawer fitted with a brass handle provides additional storage, while the original back and fielded panel sides remain in place. The bookcase stands on a solid plinth base and retains a key. It separates into two sections for easier movement and installation. Presented in good antique condition and structurally sturdy, with knocks, marks, small losses and general wear consistent with its age and historic use.
