The substantial wooden case is richly carved throughout with detailed woodland scenes, including a particularly striking depiction of a wild boar. Naturalistic foliage and forest-inspired ornament continue around the exterior, creating a highly sculptural object characteristic of the Black Forest carving tradition. A hinged upper cover opens to reveal the fitted interior, incorporating five individual pull-out drawers or compartments designed for the organised storage of tobacco and related items. The combination of practical storage and elaborate carving transforms an otherwise functional object into a highly decorative piece of craftsmanship. The tradition commonly described as Black Forest carving became particularly associated with Brienz, Switzerland, during the 19th century. Local workshops developed an international reputation for intricately carved furniture and decorative objects, frequently incorporating bears, game animals, birds, foliage and other naturalistic subjects. These works became fashionable souvenirs and luxury objects among wealthy European and international travellers. This substantial example is particularly appealing for its extensive woodland carving and prominent wild boar imagery. Presented in excellent antique condition, with no reported evidence of woodworm, significant damage or repairs. The aged surface and natural patina contribute considerably to its character. An impressive collector's piece that could continue to serve as a humidor or alternatively function as a highly decorative storage or trinket cabinet.
