Produced in the Seto region, one of Japan's historic Six Ancient Kilns, the piece combines an unusual sculptural scroll form with finely executed freehand decoration. The reverse features the traditional Ho-Ho bird, or phoenix, while the remaining decoration incorporates freely drawn floral motifs. The piece is believed to date to the Meiji period, although an earlier date remains possible. It survives in excellent condition with a small firing flaw within the decoration.
